A challenge for teachers working in online and in-person environments is teaching content in ways that actively engage and motivate students with hands-on experiences rather than presenting information that simply promotes passive learning. This session will demonstrate how a nonprofit maker space, Makersmiths, Inc. in Loudoun County, engages youth with in-person and online learning opportunities that support SOL content areas and teaches them about wind and solar energy generating systems through hands-on engineering activities. Participants will learn how these wind and solar activities can culminate in student participation in the Virginia wind and solar challenges – hosted each year by CASE at James Madison University and by KidWind.org at the national level.
